Quick answer

Coming from San Diego or anywhere in Southern California, Tijuana has the most options by far. From Yuma or the Imperial Valley, Los Algodones is the most walkable and specialized. From El Paso, Ciudad Juárez. From the Rio Grande Valley, Nuevo Progreso is the closest thing to a Los Algodones-style walk-in district on the Texas side. See the full table below for the rest.

This page picks up where our general buying guide leaves off. That guide covers why prices are lower and what you're legally allowed to bring back; this one answers the question that actually decides your trip — which town to go to — using real numbers instead of general reputation.

Live border wait times

Pulled directly from US Customs and Border Protection's public Border Wait Times data when you load this page — this is the wait heading back into the US, which is almost always the longer direction. Entering Mexico is rarely delayed.

Loading live wait times…

Wait times swing by time of day and day of week — weekday mornings are typically fastest, Sunday afternoons and evenings typically the busiest as weekend visitors head home. If a port shows no data, CBP hasn't published a recent update for it; check bwt.cbp.gov directly.

Each town, in more detail

Los Algodones, Baja California

Nicknamed "Molar City," Los Algodones packs one of the densest concentrations of pharmacies and dental clinics anywhere into a few walkable blocks right at the border. There's no vehicle border crossing into the town itself from the US side — you park on the American side and walk in, which keeps the whole trip to under an hour for most people.

Tijuana, Baja California

The busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere, and the town most Southern Californians mean when they say they're crossing for medication. Large national chains sit alongside independent pharmacies across a sprawling city, so distance from the border crossing itself varies a lot by pharmacy.

Mexicali, Baja California

Quieter and less touristy than Tijuana — this is more of a routine-refill stop for Imperial Valley residents than a destination trip. The pharmacy district sits close enough to the Calexico crossing to be walkable for most visitors.

Nogales, Sonora

A compact, walkable downtown pharmacy strip immediately across from its twin city on the Arizona side, long used by shoppers from Tucson and the rest of southern Arizona.

Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua

Decades of established cross-border pharmacy traffic from El Paso and southern New Mexico. It's a much larger city than the other towns on this list, so — as with Tijuana — how close a given pharmacy sits to the bridge varies widely.

Reynosa, Tamaulipas

A larger crossing serving the whole Rio Grande Valley, with a cluster of pharmacies near the Hidalgo bridge rather than a single compact strip.

Matamoros, Tamaulipas

Brownsville and Matamoros sit close enough that the Gateway International Bridge is a short walk from downtown on either side — a routine trip for Rio Grande Valley residents rather than a special occasion.

Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas

A small, intensely walkable town built almost entirely around cross-border shopping — well over a hundred pharmacies packed into a five-block center, immediately across a pedestrian bridge.

Frequently asked questions

Which Mexican border town is best for buying medicine?

There's no single answer — it depends on where you're starting from and what you're picking up. Los Algodones is the most walkable and most specialized in pharmacy/dental shopping specifically, but it only makes sense if you're near Yuma, AZ or the Imperial Valley. Tijuana has by far the largest number of pharmacies and chain options in our directory, which matters more if you're comparing prices across several stores rather than just grabbing one prescription. Nuevo Progreso is the closest thing to Los Algodones for the Texas side of the border.

Is Los Algodones or Tijuana better for pharmacy shopping?

Los Algodones is smaller and built specifically around walk-in pharmacy and dental shopping — you can compare several pharmacies within a five-minute walk of the border. Tijuana has vastly more pharmacies overall, including every major national chain, but it's a full city, so a specific pharmacy might be a taxi ride from the crossing rather than a walk. If you're coming from San Diego, Tijuana is the practical choice regardless; Los Algodones only makes sense from Yuma or the Imperial Valley side.

Can I just walk across the border to buy medicine?

Yes, at every town on this list — all of them have pedestrian crossings, and it's the more common way to do a same-day pharmacy trip since you avoid parking on the Mexican side entirely. Bring a valid passport or passport card; it's required to walk back into the US even for a same-day trip.

How accurate are the pharmacy counts in the comparison table?

Counts come from Frontera Rx's own pharmacy directory — a cleaned, deduplicated dataset of public pharmacy listings for each city, not an estimate. It skews toward pharmacies with a public web presence, so a town's true total may be somewhat higher; the relative comparison between towns is more reliable than any single number in isolation. See the full listing for each town linked in the table.

Do border wait times actually matter for a pharmacy trip?

Mostly on the way back, not the way in — Mexican customs rarely delays anyone entering. The US-bound wait is what can turn a 20-minute errand into a 90-minute one, and it swings a lot by time of day: weekday mornings are typically fastest, Sunday afternoons and evenings are typically the worst as weekend visitors head home. The live wait times above pull directly from CBP's own public data.

This article is for general information only and isn't medical, legal, or travel advice. Pharmacy counts reflect our directory at time of writing and change as pharmacies open, close, or get re-verified — see the full directory for the current list. Border wait times are supplied live by CBP and can be wrong or delayed during outages on their end. See Frontera Rx's full disclaimer.
